1940年，雷锋（陈海劼 饰）出生在湖南望城一户贫民家里，他五岁那年，父亲雷明亮（金永林 饰）被日本兵活活打死。为了活命，小雷锋去给地主放牛，哥哥也到镇上的染房做徒工，后来在贫病交加中死去。哥哥死后，雷锋边干活边照看年幼的弟弟，妈妈（陶慧敏 饰）则靠卖香烟火柴贴补家用，不久弟弟夭折，好心的邻居吴裁缝也被抓了壮丁。母亲因不堪汉奸刘绍礼（崔杰 饰）污辱，自尽身亡。成为孤儿的雷锋靠讨饭度日，幸遇地下党员彭大叔（吕晓禾 饰）把他收养在自己家里。解放后，雷锋（王思圣 饰）担任了儿童团长，跟着大人们斗地主、分田地，站岗放哨抓坏人，并分得一块属于自己的土地。在党和政府的关怀下，雷锋得到了上学的机会......。Koh Chun Feng's career is starting to wear away at him.
