Based on real events, the story follows a father and son (Offerman and Tremblay) who identify as Sovereign Citizens, a group of anti-government extremists, as they venture across the country and find themselves in a standoff with a chief of police (Dennis Quaid) that sets off an intense manhunt with tragic consequences.。某一天，都市中突然出现了无数诡异扭曲的怪物，这些怪物会用会在晚上攻击或者扭曲影响普通人的心智，让他们变得类魔化。人们将这些突然出现且难以名状的怪物，称之为“恐怖” 为了应对“恐怖”的攻击，一帮拥有异能强者与之展开厮杀，这些人被称之为守夜人！。
